Things to do around West Cork

Castlefreke

castlefrekeWhy not visit Castlefreke ruin which is very close by, this is the seat of the Lords of Carbery, and was originally constructed in the 1680’s. It is currently being restored to its former glory.

Drombeg Stone Circle

Drombeg is probably Irelands most famous stone circle, it is a recumbent circle with the recumbent or altar stone lying to the south-west. The circle consists of seventeen pillar stones that are graded from the two large portal stones. It is only one of the many pre-historic sites in the locality.

 

The Michael Collins Centre

The life and death of Michael Collins is explored at the Michael Collins Centre, nearby in Castleview. It features an interactive centre that explores his life and untimely death in Béal na Blath, guided tours and replicas of Crossley Tenders and Collins armoured car “Sliabh na Mbán”.

Castlefreke, along with near by Ownahincha strand are quickly becoming known as Cork’s leading surf spots. The beach is considered an intermediate surfing location with excellent rips. Average water temp. ranges from 9-15 degrees. It really perfoms best when you have a Southern swell.

When conditions are right it can equal any top reef breaks.

Rathbarry Lake walk

Once a tidal inlet to the castle now enjoys a rare tranquility in contrast to its turbulent past. Since being cut off by the sea the ecologicalRathbarry Lake, walks in West Cork importance of Rathbarry Lake has significantly developed.

Not only has it become a bird sanctuary but it is now also an important source of research on lichens and other exotic plants.

The walls of the old pier still standing remind us of the drawbridge which at one time provided access to the old coastal road to Rosscarbery.

A walk leading from the village center all the way to the Long Strand alongside Kilkeran Lake and the wetlands feeding into it. Rich in flora and fauna. It is one of the most diverse walks in West Cork, with rch archaeological ruins and the diverse fauna, wildlife and Bird sanctuary.

West Cork and especially the areas around Rosscarbery and Clonakilty are becoming renowned for walking holiday destination. Our accommodation is centrally located for all these and proves a popular base for walking holidays in West Cork, and indeed as a base for exploring all around West Cork.

Clonakilty

Clonakilty’s position as a centre of music, both traditional and contemporary, has helped this small town to become a thriving melting pot of musicians. Clonakilty’s bars host live music nights throughout the year and it is possible to find live music on most nights. Many famous musicians have found a welcome and a home here, and have contributed much to the energy and vibrancy of the town.

The late Noel Redding made Clonakilty his home as did singer-songwriter Roy Harper. Monday Night Trad Sessions, O’Donovans Tuesday Trad and Shanley’s Famous Music Bar main venues. Summer afternoon sessions in Scannells beer garden with Dave and Friends, De Barras Folk Club presents famous acts like folk legend Christy Moore and rap legend Gideon Cullum. Sharon Shannon, Frances Black and Setmaker play here regularly. Surrounding towns such as Rosscarbery are also well known for thier vibrant traditional music styles and scene.
